I just wanted to get some opinions on this. I shot this all over the course of a year and decided to make a video of all my best shots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUKi7u4EbPs

  • Hi Nathan, I am not sure what to say, I have been taking photographs, since I was nine years old.  I have been taking movies since, well way back, in the days of Super-8 and 16mm, then converted to analogue video in the eighties with Hi8 and finally to broadcast quality digital in the late nineties.  When I managed a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) I started a 'Media Department' and taught 16 to 19 year olds the art or process of photography and videography, making several international documentaries.

I am not sure what you atr trying to say here, if it's a demo of your skill, there is not enough variation in the shots, if there is a message in the video, I'm sorry I didn't spot it.  The sound became more than background, it felt as if the song was the main subject and the shots were just background to the music, like a pop video.  I am also not sure of the point of the music, what does 'I Am Perseus' mean'? Generally I saw no real tangible connection between the pictures and the music. The shots were nicely framed, and well edited with thankfully few gimmicky transitions, the lighting was excellent as was thhe colour saturation. But I have to agree with Annette, generally I don't get it either.

    • Thanks for the feedback. To be honest, I really like the song and it's copyright free so I can use it on any platform. That was the main reason I used it. I just tried to match all my shots with that song to showcase my skills. BUt your right that was my only intention. I really liked the song, showcase editing and it's copyright free. I appreciate your feedback, I'll have to choose a song that better fits what I'm going for..hmm any thoughts? Thanks again for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

      • Personally, I think you are approaching this from the wrong direction.  Making video from your own stock shots with no point never works Nathan, you need to decide what you want to say first, what statement you want to make.  You may have a few stocks that fit, but I have found that they tend to flatten the video.  Sit down and construct a storyboard of shots that speak for themselves, there is no substitute for planning my friend.  Get a good idea in your mind of what you want and go out and get it, I know it doesn't fit with the modern philosophy of 'instant' everything, but believe me, that is what professionals do, even news reports are planned on location, often after the interview is shot.

If it's a demo video you need to make it about you, your personal history, how you got into video, any appropriate qualifications you hold, maybe clips from completed productions, but introduce them as such.  Mix both voice and music, but make sure you equalise the sound, nothing annoys people more than sudden volume changes (easier to do with digital than it used to be with analogue).  You have a good eye for a shot Nathan and it seems good technical skills, but remember, every shot has a natural length, which you should not exceed, rely on your gut feelings about this, if it looks awkward edit it. Don't disregard stills, they can be very impressionable when used correctly, what I call 'flash-stills' maybe to the timing of the music.  Often it is useful to download the soundtrack and assemble your shots with no sound then dub the sound back onto the video.  Hope the comments help Nathan.

        • This definitely helps! Thanks for taking the time to give me this feedback, I appreciate it a lot.

    • I looked up Perseus and it means Destroyer

      • Wikipedia says:

"In Greek mythology, Perseus is the legendary founder of Mycenae and of the Perseid dynasty, who, alongside Cadmus and Bellerophon, was the greatest Greek hero and slayer of monsters before the days of Heracles. He beheaded the Gorgon Medusa for Polydectes and saved Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus."

So I don't know what a Greek hero has to do with the pictures or our faith, I guess we might be missing something?

  •  I'm going to be honest. I don't get it. The song I guess. You must have a theme to the video because you chose a song to go with it. The song I dont' understand how it goes with the beautiful scenes. Maybe you could help me understand.
