Yom Kippur

Starting at Sundown tonight and ending at sundown tomorrow 18-19 September is a wonderful opportunity for us all.  In English it is the Day of Atonement, which is another way of saying it is a day of confession and repentance.  As Jews it means abstaining from food and drink, bathing, sex and wearing leather shoes or perfume and engaging in prayers of repentance.  As Christians we are not bound to do these things, but we are called on the repent, so Yom Kippur is an ideal opportunity for us to contemplate and search our hearts for all those things we have done wrong.  Let us pray that the Holy Spirit show us how we have offended God by breaking His laws.  It is the day when we start our lives over.  It is the day that God Almighty says, “I forgive you”.  We have the ability to turn our sins into mitzvot (good deeds).  As the Talmud teaches, “Where those who repent stand, not even the most righteous are able to stand.”

Where does Yom Kippur come from, well God gives it to Moses as a part of the law,  in Leviticus it says:  Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves and present a food offering to the Lord." [Leviticus 23:27].  We no longer have the need or requirement to any of the denial items, other than fasting, if we are led to do so, and we have no need to make a sacrifice to God, Jesus is our sacrifice.  But might it not be a great idea to pray for forgiveness and ask the Spirit to clean us out by reminding us of those times we have broken God's law and sinned, those things that we may not even think of as a sin, or those sins we have forgotten.

Have the Happiest day.

  • If I may ask you, why do you determine the Day of atonement by Hillel II rabbinical calendar (rabbincally fixed), rather than the Torah (Bible) Karaite calandar method which differs by about a month, or 30 days or so, which would actually place the typical day of atonement in October, not in September, as Roman Catholicism does (after Hillel II's rabbinically fixed calendar)?

In doing that, it throws off the date of Christ's own Crucifixion/Passover in AD 31, and throwing it further by about 2 years, which throws off its beginning calculation and ending calculation, in Daniel 8:13-14,26, 9:24-25; Ezra 6:14, 7:1-28; Revelation 9:13-15, 10:6, 14:6-7.

The Caraites (Jews), who adhere rigidly to the Law (Torah), usually commence the year one moon later than do the others; the one class regulating their year by the vernal equinox, after the manner of the Romans,—the other by the ripening of the barely harvest, according to the requirements of the Mosaic Law.

I am only asking why it is done, or was the information not known?

Also, why would the typical date of the Day of Atonement be celebrated, rather than the anti-typical day itself, the reality of the shadow?

      • Sorry to hear that he is recently deceased, R.I.P.  Perhaps a note should be placed upon his account and have been placed in this thread as such, or closed (only suggestions).

As for the deceased, as Job said, and so many others in scripture, he will be in the grave, asleep, knowing nothing, until his respective resurrection occurs, and only then will he be with the Lord (1 Thes. 4:17), but I am not here to go ver that point, as it is not germaine to the thread.
