This group is about Discipleship, as described in the following Scriptures:

And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. (Mark 2:14 KJV)

Y al pasar, vio a Levi hijo de Alfeo, sentado al banco d los tributos públicos,, y le dino: Sígueme. Y levantándose, le siguió. (Marcos 2:14 RVR)

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." (Mark 1:17 NIV)

Y les dijo Jesús: Venid en pos de mi, y hare que seáis Pescadores de hombres. (Marcos 1:17 RVR)

When Jesus said the words “follow me”, He was saying “walk the same road”. His disciples are to continue walking with Him. Jesus is our companion as we consistently walk the same road with Him.

Not all Christians are disciples.  What does it mean to be a disciple?  How can we tell if a Christian is a disciple?  There are three evidences or results of disciples:

This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:8 NIV)  As disciples, we will bear abundant fruit. Our lives will show practical results as we follow Jesus.

En esto es glorificado mi Padre, en que Ilevéis mucho fruto, y seáis asi mis discípulos. (Juan 15:8 RVR)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. (John 8:31 NIV)  His disciples will continuously study and obey God’s Word. Jesus’ disciples hunger for the Word.  They are students of Scripture and walk according to its teachings.

Dijo entonces Jesús a los judíos que habian creido en él: Si Vosotros permaneciereis en mi palabra, series verdaderamente mis discipulos. (Juan 8:31 RVR

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35 NIV)  True disciples will have love for others, and especially fellow Christians.

En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si tuviereis amor los unos con los otros. (Juan 13:35 RVR)

Our purpose in life is to know and love God.  God has called us to know Him personally and to walk with Him.  The beautiful byproduct of this being that it will bring Him pleasure, and it will bring us pleasure too.  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.  (Revelation 4:11 KJV)

Señor, digno eres de recibir la Gloria y la honra y el poder; porque tú creaste todas las cosas, y port u voluntad existen y fueron creadas. (Apocalipsis 4: 11 RVR).

Come, join us on a journey thru the Scriptures based on a thorough study of what exactly Discipleship is, and how we can apply it to our lives.

Come, join us!

    • Hi Dolan, it is nice to meet you, and welcome to the group. I pop in every now and then to say hello to several good friends I have made over the years. The children at my church painted rocks recently and decorated them, it was very interesting to see the finished product, and I know that they enjoyed it emensly, I always enjoyed Sunday school when I was younger, and later enjoyed teaching it, the children are so receptive and soak up teaching like a sponge. God bless & keep you!! Gayla S.

    • Welcome to the Discipleship group. It's nice to have you here.  :-)

I'm watching a television show for a few minutes. The captioning has gone all wrong. The character says...I'm afraid so...The captioning says...I fried so. The captioning is getting worse and worse. LOL My mind made this jump that we preach Christ and not some weird message. I know, after midnight my mind can make that kind of jump.

Romans 10:14 asks...How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:14,15 ESV)

      Rock painting? Like Bible verses?

      God bless,

      Mary

  • This is from Worthy News Brief 4/4/17. It blessed me this morning, and I was hoping it would bless all of you. God bless!

    Choose Godspeed!

Proverbs 16:17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who keeps his way preserves his soul.

Mark 1:15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

Proverbs says the "highway of the upright is to depart from evil". It's a highway -- a way of life so to speak. And this proverb coincides with the central teaching of Yeshua (Jesus) -- "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand." What does it mean to repent? The Greek Word is "metanoia" which simply means to change your mind about sin or to depart from evil.

Repentance is essentially a new attitude about the way I conduct my life. I don't expect perfection while remaining in this mortal body -- but a lifestyle of repentance means that I choose to live my life set apart unto the Lord, in communion with His Holy Spirit who lives in me, constantly turning away from and/or confessing my sins. Repentance does not involve rehearsing guilt, regret, or sins of the past, because true repentance and confession removes those from our conscience and the Lord declares them to be as far as the east is from the west!

Choose the highway of the upright and speed your way through life's journey to the Kingdom of Heaven which awaits you. The enemy would love to sidetrack or distract you with the enticement of sin -- but even if he succeeds temporarily, you can always repent -- and speedily, get back on the right road --the highway of the upright.

  • I wish you a blessed Hanakkuh's Eve. It is a Jewish tradition to give each other a gift each night of Hanakkuh. I know. I know. It's not Hanakkuh yet. It's getting close. When you have a gift, it is difficult to hang on to it. Gifts are meant to be given.  :-)

A Bible verse is my gift. This is one of my favorite verses...

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (1 John 3:1 NIV)

We are called God's children, and that's what we are! The world doesn't know us, but that's because the world doesn't know Him.

    God's Love,

    Mary

Can We Be A Disciple Of Jesus?

Once we have made the decision to follow Jesus, we can become one of His disciples. The word disciple actually means to learn or follow. We can think that we are not good enough or worthy to become a disciple of Jesus. But the Bible tells us that He loves us all equally as Peter says in Acts 10:34-36, “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear [honor] him and do what is right. We know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christwho is Lord of all.”

Following Jesus doesnt mean we are without trials. In fact, a great many followers of Jesus have suffered tremendous persecutions. Paul addresses this in 2 Corinthians 12:1-9. He said, Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That is why I take pleasure in my weaknesses and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weakthen I am strong.”

God can demonstrate His might, mercy, and sovereign grace through our worst times. And He says that trials make us stronger. But as His follower, we now have Jesus to help us, guide us, and comfort us through our trials -- large and small.Following Jesus brings comfort and reward beyond our comprehension.

I want to be a disciple of Jesus. How about you?
    • Pastor Hobkirk, Thank you for sharing once again.  You have a knack for posting things that I can apply to myself and grow from them.  Please keep them coming!

  • God always does this. I'll be talking or thinking about a subject and next thing I know I'll find something about it in my devotions. This is from Worthy News Brief. Please enjoy. I feel like the Worthy News Brief people have adopted me.

    Press forward!

Phil. 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

A life without a goal is like the captain of a ship without a map and a compass. His ship will just drift aimlessly from day to day hoping to arrive somewhere. The apostle Paul set for himself a goal! He pressed forward in search for his goal -- he pressed toward the mark of the high calling in Messiah! He had a clear direction of where he was going and he was focused on the Lord! How much more should we!

By setting a goal, we are making a decision to act. We are providing ourselves a map and depending on the Lord to be our compass -- to provide the direction He wants us to go! A goal is more than a dream -- it's a dream acted upon. It's not saying "oh, I wish I could" -- it's declaring what we want to do for the Lord-- it's a declaration of faith!

Let's make our lives interesting -- let's set for ourselves a goal! Let's make a clear declaration of faith, saying "This is what I am going to do for the Lord and then press forward!" I can't wait to see where the Lord will take us!
