Dark Writings

I sometimes wonder If alot of my writings could be considered evil. While I was recovering from my meth addiction, I often expressed my thoughts and feelings though very dark poetry. I wrote using imagery of shadows, madness, heathen gods and demons. None of it was meant literally. It was all highly metaphorical and meant to represent the struggles I had with sobriety and social problems. Fortunately I am out of that stage of my life, but I do feel like I did some of my best work in that time. But even though it was all metaphorical, I sometimes wonder if the way I depicted my thoughts was evil.

  • Hi Nathan, God bless you. I've thought about it for a few days. I'm an artist. I've been in your shoes. You have your before you accepted Christ work and your after accepting Christ work. Many of us have made dark things before we got born again.  Not saying it's something you should do, but I stopped drawing and painting for a while and applied myself to reading the Bible. God's Word can heal our thoughts. I began to use my artistic talent to illustrate Bible verses. I know there are plenty of Christian poets. I feel my new work is better.

Maybe search for a class on Christian poetry, or think about it. A friend of mine has a class on Christian artistry. A section of her class is about evaluating artwork and determining "what's wrong with it". She evaluates artwork to make it better and more Christ-like. Course, not everyone wants your opinion about their work. Her class is strictly voluntary. You just kind of have to have thick skin and be meek. She critique's with love.

You can read and evaluate poetry and recognize dark things woven into it. Not everyone can do that. You look at things with spiritual eyes now based on the Word of God. I read some of Poe's works for school. He was on drugs, but he was also grieving or perhaps he made a point of studying grief.??? He had a lot of dark meanings woven into his works. Example: The Purloined Letter is about hatred and revenge. The ending is very ominous. I feel Poe covers many emotions we feel before we accept Christ. Maybe he used the drugs to amplify his emotions. I thought, wow, he was a messed up dude. I got the message the Lord wanted me to see.

I was a mess before I accepted Christ. Look how far you've come. You know you wrote using imagery of shadows, madness, heathen gods, and demons. You know.

Ephesians 2:12-13 NLT...In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. (I like this translation.)

He has brought peace to you. You and I aren't struggling and bumping heads with God anymore.

2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV...We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

We change how we are doing things. We deliberately decide to obey Christ. We want what we do and say to glorify God. Everything gives off something. Ask, does this bless God and please Him?

    I hope this is helpful.

    God's love,

    Mary

    • P.S., I own it so to speak. I did all these dark works, but Mary doesn't do that anymore. I'm a completely different person. I've found Christ and have accepted Him as my Saviour. With full knowledge and deliberate decision, I have decided to follow Him and God's Word.

      God bless,

      Mary

  • Do you think maybe evil influence?  We open ourselves to the influence of those we embrace.  Remember the story Christ told about the house that was swept ( Demon cast out of person)  and devel returned and found hous swept and empty , it  entered again and took other evil spirits with him?  When we dwell on dark things we associate with them and allow them into our lives.  Christ said " Set your sights ( thoughts) on things that are above. There is always something wiling to fill a vacuum.  Just getting rid of the evil is not enough, we have to fill our lives with the Spirit of God.   Godspeed on dealing with your addictions, Focusing on God is a great starting place.
