Sooo many times, I have been asked, How do I know what is the right thing to do? I have asked the same question many times my self.

In any situation, there are basically 2 things you can do, the Right thing or The Wrong thing. On one hand you have God telling you to do something (The right thing) and on the other hand, you have Satan/the Devil telling 3 or 4 different options (the Wrong thing). How do you know the difference.

I learned this lesson a long time ago, and still messed it up. It is not easy, but there is a way to know, but most people do not want to do things God's way.

  • Thank you Brother James for bring this to my attention, and thank you Brother Derek and Pastor Rolf for both of your input.  I have learned something I thought I knew all along is right, and that is Never Stop Praying about things you have questions about.  Trust in HIM for HE will light your path.

    • Yes Terry, we are all continually learning, all of the time for all of our lives.  I have one of my favorite verses right at the top of my main web-site 'Bible Science' it is:

‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

      Jeremiah 33:3

This verse is so true, I have found that if we do not understand something, if I call upon the Lord, He explains or gives me understanding, Amen?

    • That is what Christian Social Networks is all about, Helping an encouraging one another to be the best we can all be for the Glory of Almighty God.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (ESVUK)

21 but test everything; hold fast what is good.

There is also this Biblical principle of testing, which not only applies to teaching but to all things.  If we visit someone's home and there is no signs that anyone is in the house, what do we do?  We do not just shrug and walk away, we walk up to the front door and ring the bell or knock on the door, just to test if what you assume is correct.  Sometimes we need to take an action in order to test if a decision is correct.  AS Rolf says, if that decision is the wrong, then, if we are truly in tune with the Spirit, He will block you, because He is in control.

I may have related this previously, as it is one of my favorite illustrations, but you know our walk with God is like being on a railroad train, we know where God wants us, doing His will, but the route is up to Him.  We sit in our carriage/car/compartment and we can see where we are, as we can see through the windows (the here and now), and we know where we have come from, but we cannot see the road ahead.  God the Father is the signalman (controller), only He can see the great plan, and only He can operate the switch-gear (here in the UK we call them 'points') to send the train on a different set of rails, if we take the wrong track, or 'come off the rails'.  The driver is our will and the Spirit is the guard (brake-man).  There are many more analogies but these will do for now, but in the end we trust the controller of the railroad to get where we should be, so we should trust our God to get us where 'HE' would have us to be.

    • I love the illustration.

ANd yes, the Bible does teach us to try the Spirits to see if they are of God or not.

  • When I look to discern the Lord's will in a situation, the "right thing to do" I look for everything to line up straight towards the goal. If circumstances, and God's apparent blessing on something, and adequate intercession has been done, and it lines up with God's Word (the Bible), and it feels right, both my emotions and in my spirit, while my discernment from the Holy Spirit being "go ahead", I can generally be confident the Lord is on my side in something.. He'll generally also correct me if I'm wrong pretty fast. Praise God; His burden is light, and His Blessings bountiful!

  • So far we have gotten 3 really good answers to this question, I hope we will get a few more before this is done.

    What God showed me, was:

John 14:26-27 King James Version (KJV)

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The first thing to do is to Pray and submit your self to God.

James 4:7 King James Version (KJV)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ask God for His guidance, Seek His Strength and Wisdom, Knock on the door presented to you for Him to open.

Matthew 7:7-8 King James Version (KJV)

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

After you Pray, wait on the Lord to answer, Listen to what He tells. It may not be what you want to hear, but knows what is best and know s what He is doing.

We can only see a small part of the picture; God can see the entire picture.

God will tell you the right thing to do; the Devil will only tell you the wrong thing to do.

You know it is from God, because you will have peace about it. And no matter how it turns out. Know that God has a plan and it will work out.

Romans 8:28 King James Version (KJV)

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

  • I try to do what is most practical, simple, and will glorify God. I find that these often go together. I will admit that sometimes it is not always completely clear but one must move with the Lord in view.
