I havn't read the whole Bible throughly yet but I know that it states throughout The Bible including verse Leviticus 26:1 which says "You shall make you no idols nor graven image neither rear you up a standing image neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God". Leviticus 26:1

I believe that making graven images of things in Heaven & on Earth is also one of the 10 commandments. I think it was the second commandment.

Is wearing jewellery with the cross or crucifix, may it be a necklace, earrings or bracelet etc a form of idolatry? Is doing this going against scripture? I wear a necklace with the cross on it but I am beginning to believe that wearing a cross or owning a statue etc of the cross, crucifix or even of Jesus alone is committing idolatry. I used to believe that wearing a cross or crucifix around my neck or another form of jewellery was a representation of Jesus dying for our sins but now I am starting to believe that it is the wrong thing to do and I am thinking about removing the cross from my necklace.

If you believe what I am saying is correct, please explain why and if you believe otherwise , why do you believe that wearing the cross or crucifix is not committing idolatry?

  • I do not believe that wearing a crucifix is in itself idolatry.  You can make an idol of almost anything even the bible if you worship it rather than or more than the  God of which it speaks .  I personally have never understood the reverence that some seem to have for the cross. There were 2 thieves also on crosses and often see all three displayed.  Should someone wear a piece of jewelry in the shape of a whip that was used on our Lord?  Maybe an empty tomb?  The story of redemption is the greatest story ever told, I personally think that a cross shaped piece of jewelry does not do  it justice.  Please know that this is just my personal opinion and I am in no way qualified to judge the thoughts or intentions of others.  That is between then and God alone.

  • No they are not unless you are bowing to a cross or a stone as an actual God in itself.

Your wearing a cross would probably fall into the catagory of a 'sacramental' (not a sacrament).  Sacramentals are said to be reminders of your faith.  Some churches favor the use of sacramentals, some do not.

Another thing to watch out for is the sin of pride.  Do not wear jewellry just to show off....

  • I have posted a study in the Bible Study Group on this very subject Alison (click the link below)

It seems that what God is actually saying is that we should not 'worship' images, this is an expressed view, "You shall not bow down to them or serve them, says Exodus 20:5, so it is about we regard the image, if like some churched we worship these carved images or bow to them then that is in direct contravention to God's law.  The word 'Graven' which the scripture uses here refers to carved images, i.e. statues, so we could say the if we bow to the cross on our church's alter, that is also wrong.  Strangely it does not seem to apply to 2D images.

I used to wear a very small cross-pin in my lapel, it was not there for me to worship, but as a reminder that I was an ambassador for Christ, people could see that I was a Christian, so I was aware of that and it stopped me doing, saying or action in a way that was not commensurable with being a Christian.  I don't believe that there is any wrong in wearing an empty cross as a witness and conversation starter, just not to worship or bow down to them.
