Who am I?

My name means "Yahweh is he" in Hebrew. My father was Jehoshaphat. My grandfather was Nimshi. I was a commander in Ahab's army in the northern kingdom of Israel for a while before becoming king of Israel.

Jezebel was an evil woman. She married Ahab and introduced him to her favourite pastime, Baal and Ashtoreth worship. They had both decided to invite the Israelites to join in their fun of doing the same. I was considered to be a reformer of sorts, who was used by God to clean up that mess Ahab had made.

I was chosen as one of three men who would enact God's judgment upon Ahab’s family. God told the prophet Elijah, “Anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu." God was determined to destroy Ahab's dynasty one way or another.

In order to secure the throne and prevent queen Jezebel from assuming complete rule along with Ahab's son, Joram, who was king of the northern kingdom of Israel, I needed to take further measures. I went to Jezebel’s palace in Jezreel, where the queen stood watching for me at her window. At my command, eunuchs surrounding Jezebel threw her down from the window. Jezebel’s blood splattered over the ground, and her body was eaten by dogs. God told me to leave no one affiliated with king Ahab standing. So I didn't. I had entered the temple of Baal and slaughtered all the priests of Baal and destroyed the temple and its sacred stone, thus eradicating Baal worship in Israel.

God had blessed me greatly for my obedience until I had made the mistake of idolatrous worship of king Jeroboam. God began to reduce the size of Israel, gradually giving them over to the power of even Hazael of Syria.

I suppose a great lesson can be learned from my life. Although it is true that God blesses and grants success to those who seek to obey Him, God also can and will pull away His blessing from one who willfully chooses to live in sin. Always remember, you cannot serve two masters.
